Solo in Carnatic and Jazz

with 2 comments

Carnatic concerts are interspersed with solo displays of improvisations from percussionists known as Tani Avartanam. Thiruvarur Bhaktavatsalam (Mridangam), G. Harishankar (Kanjira), E. M. Subramaniam (Ghatam) are the performers.

Here is Ray Mantilla performing a percussion solo at Bitonto Jazz Festival.

  1. That video of Harishankar, Thiruvarur Bhaktavatsalam and Subramaniam is something I’ve watched and rewatched several times on Youtube. It is one of my favourites. The speed, precision and synchronization of these three couldn’t have been achieved in most other music groups.

  2. Just after I posted this, I heard that Ravi Shankar introduced Thani-Avarthanam in Hindustani and since then it has become a tradition in Hindustani concerts. Couldn’t find anything quite like this one on you tube, though.
